Hurricane season is ramping up quickly this year. The season runs from June 1st to November 30th every year, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts an above-average season for 2024. According to NOAA, the odds of having an above-average hurricane season this year are 85%, with four to seven of those storms forecast to become major hurricanes.
While it is great to plan ahead and have a hurricane plan and supplies at hand prior to the start of the season, it is never too late to get started. Many families have an official hurricane plan in place. This document outlines how to react and what each family member will do in the event of an emergency. It is also a good idea to purchase supplies for these types of emergencies. Supplies needed will vary by individual/ family, but NOAA recommends having three days’ worth of provisions set aside per person in the household. If you would like to avoid paying taxes on your supplies, mark your calendars for the upcoming tax-free holiday. Each year, Florida’s Department of Revenue hosts two Disaster Preparedness Tax-Free Holidays. 2024’s events will take place from June 1st through June 14th, and the second will occur August 24th to September 6th.
