The discussion surrounding parasocial relationships between fans and celebrities has been ongoing for years, especially with the growth of social media. The constant access to celebrities’ lives and the ability to interact with them directly has intensified these relationships. Admiring an artist or performer is normal, but some fans take it too far.
What are parasocial relationships? Psychology Today describes parasocial relationships as “one-sided relationships in which a person develops a strong sense of connection, intimacy, or familiarity with someone they don’t know.” In this case, the fans give up their time, energy, and finances to support the celebrity they love, who isn’t aware of their existence.
It’s important to understand that parasocial relationships aren’t always harmful. Admiring and looking up to someone, whether an actor, athlete, or social media personality, can be a positive experience. The benefits include a sense of social connection, inspiration, and even preparation for genuine relationships, as noted by Gayle Stever, a researcher in fan studies, parasocial theory, and celebrity studies. For instance, a fan drawing inspiration from a celebrity’s journey to overcome a personal struggle can be a healthy manifestation of parasocial relationships.
Chappell Roan recently went online to set boundaries between herself and her fans. She posted a TikTok video sharing her experience with fans who overstepped these boundaries, asking her audience questions such as, ‘If you saw a random woman on the street, would you yell at her from the car window… would you stalk her family… would you follow her around?’ Her message was clear: ‘This is a lady you don’t know, and she doesn’t know you at all.’
This TikTok video sparked an online debate over parasocial relationships and boundaries. Some have criticized her, calling her entitled and suggesting she’s ungrateful for the career her fans contributed to, while others applaud her for establishing clear boundaries. Despite the differing opinions circulating online, the bottom line is this: celebrity or not, everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect. Simply because someone chooses to share their talent with the world doesn’t mean they forfeit the right to feel safe in their personal lives.
