In this student spotlight, Joselyn Wanberg discusses her dream of becoming an ultrasound technician, experience as an athlete on LSSC’s volleyball team, and passion for the visual arts.
Becoming an Ultrasound Technician
As a freshman student at LSSC, Joselyn is currently completing her Associate of Arts degree. She wants to work in sonography as an ultrasound technician.
“Currently, I’m trying to work in sonography, so that I can become an ultrasound technician. So, I’m getting my prerequisites out of the way.”
Lakehawk Volleyball
Joselyn is a member of the Lakehawk volleyball team. She plays as the team’s libero, which is the player specializing in defensive skills. Joselyn shared that her love for volleyball began at a young age.
“I’ve loved volleyball since the 8th grade. I’ve been playing since then, and when I found an opportunity to play here [at LSSC as a] Lakehawk, I took it right away.”
Joselyn believes that volleyball’s fast pace makes it stand out from other sports. Said pace is one of the reasons contributing to her immense enjoyment for volleyball.
“For me, I just love the fast pace of the game. A lot of other sports have a lot of timeouts and a lot of slowdowns, but volleyball is just ‘go, go, go,’ and I like that about it.”
Joselyn is also a Christian. She explained she tries displaying Christian character with everyone by being a good leader and example to her team, sharing her faith with others on campus, and being slow to anger (the last attribute directly references James 1:19 in the Bible).
“Well, on the court, the way I show it [Christian character] is by not getting mad, or at least trying not to get mad, [and] trying to keep my calm. I try to lead my team as I should, as a good Christian leader, trying to just be a good example to other people. Then, on campus, I try to talk about my faith to other people as much as I can. Anytime I get an opening, I just like to bring it up and ‘open the door.’”
Joselyn also emphasized the importance of displaying Christian character through a combination of one’s actions and attitude towards others.
“I’d say actions go far more than words ever will. So, if I’m not looking like a Christian, not acting friendly, or showing God’s love to other people, then what’s the point of talking about my faith? So, showing my Christianity in my actions is always first.”
When Joselyn was compared to Mr. Rogers, a Christian who demonstrated God’s love through his actions and attitude (especially with children in his show “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood”), she confirmed her admiration for him.
“If I could live up to Mr. Rogers, that would be a dream of mine. I love Mr. Rogers.”
Joselyn, Painting, and Bob Ross
Besides her love for her church and volleyball, Joselyn is also passionate about painting.
“I really like to draw. I’m big on painting. I have an easel in my room. I just like to make art and stuff.”
While Joselyn currently does not have a favorite illustrator, she expressed that she has been fond of various art mediums during different periods of her life.
“I’ve gone through a bunch of different phases in my life where I liked certain types of arts at certain times.”
During the different phases in her life, one of Joselyn’s favorite artists was Bob Ross. She admitted that she would watch episodes of his show “The Joy of Painting” when she was younger.
“I used to watch him [Bob Ross] in 6th grade every day, like every single day, every video. He was my favorite [artist] for a long time.”
Advice for Students
Joselyn advises students to get involved in a community, to be grateful for the blessings one has, and for students to strive their best in everything they do. Additionally, Joselyn shared how having Jesus in the center of her life helps her maintain tranquility and serenity in everything she does.
“I would say, if you have Jesus in the center of your life, you know that you can stay calm. Just know that He’ll work things for you, and that it’s gonna work out no matter what. So, it’s easier to have peace in your life if you know that.”
Joselyn and her fellow volleyball team members played remarkably during LSSC’s “Pink Out” volleyball game at the Leesburg campus for Breast Cancer Awareness Month on October 14, 2025. Joselyn also attends the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) meetings at the Leesburg campus, and invites others to join the meetings as well.
