In this staff spotlight, Madison Jardim discusses her majoring in healthcare administration, her experience as a tutor for both the Writing Center and STEM Center, and her love for Taylor Swift’s music.
Pursuing Healthcare Administration
Jardim completed her associate’s degree at LSSC. She is currently a student at the University of Central Florida. She originally switched her major from psychology to business, but ultimately decided on pursuing healthcare administration.
“I felt like health care administration kind of merged everything that I wanted to do together…”
Tutoring Students at the Writing Center and STEM Center
When she was a student at LSSC, Jardim would frequently visit the Learning Center (now known as the Writing Center) to study anatomy. During one of her visits, the center’s manager at the time offered her a job as a tutor.
“I’ve been working [as a tutor] for two and a half years. I used to be a full time, dual-enrolled student, and I would come in here [the Writing Center] when it was just the Learning Center…I would always come here to study anatomy. The manager at the time, not the current manager, she was like ‘Oh, you should apply. We need more anatomy tutors,’ so I did.”
Jardim confirmed that she is a tutor for both the STEM Center (just like her fellow tutor Abrianna), and the Writing Center as well.
“I work in the Writing center and in the STEM center. When I’m here [in the Writing Center], I do English and writing. In the STEM center, I do mostly anatomy, but I can also do lower-level math.”
For students who are nervous or afraid of reaching out to a tutor, Jardim understands those feelings. She encourages students to try asking tutors for help, since tutors like her care about attending to students’ needs. She also mentions that tutoring is a resource students should use as part of their tuition.
“Honestly, we [her and other tutors] are always happy to help. I understand some students might be nervous…but we never mind helping anybody. The tutoring comes in your [students’] tuition, so [I encourage students] to utilize that.”
Jardim also shared what the process of helping students at both the Writing Center and STEM Center looks like.
“In the Writing Center, when the student walks in, we [her and other tutors] are like, ‘What do you need help with?’ Then, they let us know, and we get them a tutor. In the STEM Center, a lot of students just go in, study, and do their work. When they have a question, they’ll raise their hands, and we’ll go to them. A lot of times in the STEM Center, we’re always told to walk around and be like, ‘Do you guys need help? Are you guys doing OK?’”
Jardim is also a Christian. She said that she tries displaying Christian-character at her job and with others on campus by demonstrating God’s love through her actions and attitude, applying the fruit of the Spirit (mentioned in Galatians 5:22-23), and serving others at her job in a loving way. She also emphasized that she ponders about the question “What would Jesus do?” in her interactions with others.
“‘What would Jesus do?,’I just think about that a lot, and like displaying kindness to everybody, [and] helping everybody to the best of my ability. If people ask me about my [Christian cross] necklace, I’ll tell them [about its meaning].”
Madison’s Love for Taylor Swift’s Music
Besides loving fitness and the color pink, Jardim admitted that she is a Swiftie (Taylor Swift fan). She also shared her favorite Taylor Swift song and album respectively.
“I’m a big Swiftie. I love Taylor Swift…My favorite Taylor Swift album is ‘1989’ and my favorite song is–it switches a lot–but I would say right now it’s ‘The Fate of Ophelia.’”
Jardim also shared that she enjoys Taylor Swift’s ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ album.
“I actually really like that album [‘The Life of a Showgirl’]. A lot of people don’t like it for whatever reason. They’re like, ‘Oh, it’s not as good as her other albums,’ but I like it because I like pop music.”
Advice for Students
Jardim advises students to use the college’s resources that are available to them such as tutoring, counseling, and events.
“My advice would be to take advantage of all the stuff that your school has to offer. For example, tutoring, counseling, [and] events, and just make the most out of what you have.”
Jardim tutors at the South Lake campus’ STEM Center and Writing Center. If students need help with anatomy or writing, she will be available to help them throughout this semester.
